    2. When the display reads “0.0” step on the Body Monitor with bare feet to start the reading. Make sure each foot touches the two metal elements.
    3. The Body Monitor starts measuring. Step off once your fat percentage is shown to start the data transfer and keep the Connector aimed at the Body Monitor until the red light has stopped blinking. Consequently, you can use the UP and DOWN-buttons on the Body Monitor to scroll through your reading results.
    4. To send the data to your online profile, stick the Connector in the USB port of your computer. Your browser is automatically started and shows you the message: “Connector data uploaded to your profile.” You can now log in to your profile to check the graphs of your readings.

Frequent Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

How does the Body Composition Monitor work?

The Body Composition Monitor uses bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). This is considered to be one of the most reliable and accessible methods of screening your body composition. Information like your height, age, gender and body type are used in combination with the results of a small electric signal which is circulated through your body. Simply explained, BIA measures the impedance or resistance to the signal as it travels through the water that is found in muscle and fat. The more muscle a person has, the more water their body can hold. The greater the amount of water in a person's body, the easier it is for the current to pass through it. The more fat, the more resistance to the current. BIA is safe and it does not hurt at all.

What do the Body Composition values mean?

  • Weight – Body weight in kilograms, pounds or stones.
  • Fat – The fat percentage of your body. For women until 40 years old, a healthy fat percentage is somewhere between 20% - 33%. For women beyond 40 years old the upper limit goes up to 36% of body fat. For men until 40 years old, a healthy fat percentage lies between 8% - 20%. For men beyond 40 years old the upper limit goes up to 25% of body fat.
  • Water – The percentage of water in your body. For women, the Body Water should be between 45% - 60%. For men this should be between 50% - 65%.
  • Muscle – The Muscle Mass of your body is in kilograms. If you sync to your online profile, the Muscle Percentage of your body is displayed as well.
  • PHY Rate – Your Physique Rating is a rating developed by Tanita to rate your body from 1 – 9, based on your other body composition values. 1. Hidden obese 2. Obese 3. Solidly built 4. Under exercised 5. Standard 6. Standard Muscular 7. Thin 8. Thin and muscular 9. Very Muscular. Your PHY Rate is not displayed in your online profile.
  • BMR – Your Basal Metabolic Rate is the amount of energy expended (calories burnt) per day when your body is at total rest. Your BMR decreases in age and can be increased by increasing your muscle mass.
  • Met Age – Your Metabolic Age is a valuation in years of the metabolic characteristics of your body. If your Metabolic Age is below your actual age it means that the metabolic characterics of your body are good compared to your age and visa versa.
  • Bone – Your Bone Mass is the amount of bone in your body in kilograms. Indication on the average bone mass for women: weight below 50 kg : 1.95 kg bone. Weight of 50 kg to 75 kg: 2.40 kg bone. Weight of 75 kg and beyond: 2.95 kg. Indication on the average bone mass for men: weight below 65 kg : 2.65 kg bone. Weight of 65 kg to 95 kg: 3.29 kg bone. Weight of 95 kg or beyond: 3.69 kg.
  • Visceral – Your Visceral Fat or organ fat is the amount of fat inside your abdominal cavity, packed between your internal organs. There is a strong correlation between excess visceral fat and cardiovascular disease. The Body Monitor rates your Visceral Fat from 1 – 59. A rating of 1 – 12 is considered to be a healthy level of Visceral Fat. A rating of 13 – 59 indicates that you have an excess level of Visceral Fat.
  • BMI – Your Body Mass Index is an indication of how healthy your weight in relation to your height. BMI is not shown on the Body Monitor display, but in your online profile (after syncing or manually entering your weight). Interpretation of the BMI values: below 18.5 : underweight. 18.5 – 20.0 slightly underweight. 20 – 25 healthy weight. 25 – 27: slightly overweight. 27 – 30: overweight. 30 – 40: obese. 40+ morbid obese.

Should I measure my Body Composition under certain specific conditions?

To ensure accuracy, readings should be taken without clothing and under consistent conditions of hydration. If you do not undress, always remove your socks or stockings, and be sure the soles of your feet are clean before stepping onto the measuring platform. Be sure your heels are correctly aligned with the electrodes on the measuring platform. Don’t worry if your feet appear too large for the unit, accurate readings can still be obtained if your toes overhang the platform. It is best to take readings at the same time of day. Try to wait about three hours after rising, eating, or exercising before taking measurements. While readings taken under other conditions may not have the same absolute values, they are accurate for determining the percentage of change as long as the readings are taken in a consistent manner. To monitor progress, compare your Body Composition taken under the same conditions over a period of time.

Can guest users also measure their Body Composition? (Guest Mode)

Yes, they can. The Body Monitor has a special Guest Mode, which allows anyone to quickly measure their Body Composition. When the Body Monitor is OFF press the UP-button (which has “Guest” written above). Consequently, the guest user should set his/her age by scrolling with the UP or DOWN buttons and confirm with the SET-button. Then the guest user must his/her gender by the correct icon and confirm with SET. If the guest user is an athlete, select the gender icon plus the running man-icon. Finally, the guest user should set his/her height and confirm with the SET-button. When the display reads “0.0” the guest user should step on the Body Monitor with bare feet to start the reading. Make sure each foot touches the two metal elements. When the fat percentage is shown, the guest user can step off. Consequently, the UP and DOWN-buttons on the Body Monitor can be used to scroll through the reading results.

Can the Body Monitor also just measure my weight only?

Yes, you can. Press the WEIGH/OFF-button (between Personal Keys 1+2 and 3+4 at the underside of the Body Monitor) with your foot. Once the display shows “0.0” you can stand on the scale (with or without your shoes/socks on). The Body Monitor will now display your current weight.

Can I sync the Body Monitor with more than one online profile?

Yes, the Body Monitor can be used in combination with the online platform by an unlimited number of people. The easiest way is to use a separate Connector for each user. However, it is also possible to use one Connector for multiple persons by formatting the Connector before use by another user. Check the online F.A.Q. on how to format the Connector.

How can I format the Connector for a new user?

In order to format the Connector, stick the Connector in the USB port and let it sync with the online website. Consequently, right click on the RelayKey software-icon (white square with blue text) in your Windows taskbar and select “Format Relay Key”. Enter ANY valid username and password, in example your own, to confirm and the Connector will be formatted. Now remove the Connector and plug it back in the USB port and you can register it to any new online account by filling the username and password of the new user.

Troubleshooting

The Body Monitor display reads "Error"

The "Error"-message may appear in case you move too much on the Body Monitor. It cannot accurately measure your weight if it detects movement, so please keep movement to a minimum. Also, if your Body Fat Percentage is more than 75%, readings cannot be obtained from the Body Monitor.

The Body Monitor display reads "Lo"

This messages indicates that the batteries are low. Be sure to replace the batteries immediately, since weak batteries will affect the accuracy of your measurements. Change all the batteries at the same time with new batteries. Please note: Your settings will not be erased from the memory when you remove the batteries.

The Body Fat Percentage does not appear or "-----" appears after the weight is measured

This occurs when the Body Monitor has trouble making an accurate reading. Make sure socks or stockings are removed, and the soles of your feet are clean and properly aligned on the electrodes of the Body Monitor.

The Body Monitor display reads "OL"

This message appears in case the weight capacity of the Body Monitor is exceeded. The maximum capacity is 150 kilograms.

The Connector shows a continuous red light

The Connector light is continuously red in case an error has occurred. Possibly, you have not registered the Connector yet. Stick the Connector in the USB port of your computer to resolve the error. You may need to format the Connector.

The Connector shows a flashing red light

The Connector shows a flashing red light in case the Communication was not successfully completed. Try to do a new measurement and make sure the Connector is aimed at the Body Monitor from a short distance during communication after the measurement.

The Connector's green light keeps burning. How can it be turned off?

The infrared communication is stand-by. You can end this proces by keeping the Communication button on the Connector pressed until the red light is shown. The Connector will then turn itself off.

Getting started without Connector

We advise you to read the Activity Monitor User Manual first (also available as download). This is a short step by step guide to get you started quickly.

  1. Insert the batteries in the Activity Monitor (backside, use the provided screwdriver), set the current time and choose a user number of your preference from 1-9, in example 1.
  2. Using the Activity Monitor
    1. In order to use the Activity Monitor you just have to carry it with you, i.e. in your pocket. The device consequently measures your steps during various activities, like walking, jogging, stairwalking and even jump-roping. By pushing the Data Transmission key (right side of the round button) you can cycle through the various data to see how you are doing at that particular moment in time. The data shown is the current time, the amount of steps that day, the total amount of steps in the memory and the user number. We advize you to check regularly during the day to see if your daily goal is within reach. If not, take the stairs and why not make an extra walk after dinner!
    2. If you want to keep track of your activity online using the Connector, you can read below how this works.
